This year, 2017, has proven to be a busy one for Kai Skaggs. So far, Kai has received a Silver Medal in the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra’s solo concerto competition, he tied for first place in the Senior Strings Division of the Civic Orchestra of Tucson’s Young Artists’ Competition, he was selected for the 1st violin section at the Arizona All-State Honors Orchestra, he was selected to be Concertmaster at the Southwest Regional High School Orchestra Festival, he was requested to play in a masterclass with international violin soloist Suyeon Kang, he performed with the Tucson Repertory Orchestra, and he was Concertmaster with the Canyon Del Oro High School Orchestra, who recently performed at Carnegie Hall in New York.
In 2016, Kai was selected to be Concertmaster in the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra, he was the violin accompanist with Tucson’s Sons of Orpheus choir and performed with them in May at the Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Église de la Madeleine in Paris, and he was requested to play in a masterclass at the University of Arizona with Violin Professor Dr. Timothy Kantor.
In 2015, he received a Superior rating (the highest rating) at the Arizona Music Educator Association’s Junior Solo and Ensemble Competition, he won first place in the Junior Strings Division of the Civic Orchestra of Tucson’s Young Artists’ Competition, and was invited to play in a masterclass with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra’s famous violinist, Vijay Gupta.
At school, Kai is a Teacher’s Assistant under Conductor Mr. Toru Tagawa and has conducted two performances of Canyon Del Oro’s Concert Orchestra. In addition to school and violin, he has also been studying Aikido with Sonoran Aikikai for the past 9 years; along with English he speaks Japanese and is studying German. Kai is 15 years old and is currently a Sophomore at Canyon Del Oro High School. He has studied violin since the age of four. His current private violin teacher is Nokuthula Ngwenyama.
